IMPROV 101: Improv Basics

Glossophobia, or the fear of public speaking, is remarkably common. In fact, some experts estimate that as much as 75 percent of the population has some level of anxiety regarding public speaking.

I should know I was one of them. Through improv has helped me overcome my fears and for the last 18 plus years, I have performed in many cities and in different languages. NOW it's my turn to help YOU.

This class introduces the Upright Citizens Brigade philosophy and terminology on the basics of how to perform long-form improv. Students will learn how to use "yes-and," playing at the top of your intelligence, active listening, character development, object work, create a powerful speech or monologue and support to create comedic improvised scenes. Also great for self-confidence, develop public speaking skills, communication skills, build trust, and team support.

No experience or prerequisites are necessary!

This course is 4 sessions (12 hours total) + FREE Thursday Improv classes during Jan., Feb. 

Also included is Chris Shurland's workshops in February.

NELSON PIRES, TEACHER

Nelson Pires is a writer, director, and performer from the USA. He has written and directed the film "Street Wars", performed in countless shows over the past 18 years, wrote a sketch comedy show for Hawaiian Cable TV and is currently writing a book on helping people getting over their fears on public speaking.

Nelson is also the founder of the Bangkok International Improv Festival, manages the improv troupe Young Dumb Broke and the Spanglish group Lugares, worked with comedians from Comedy Central, taught Slot Machine, studied theatre arts at Westfield State University, University of Hawai'i Manoa, stage combat at Shakespeare & Company, and improvisational comedy at Upright Citizens Brigade Hollywood. Also the winner of the Toastmasters Best Table Topics Award 2019 and some of his students went on to the finals in the Comedy Death Match Competition.

He is also looking to create a NEW improv troupe in Bangkok. (Must complete improv 101 course to audition)
