The opening night of The Magners International Comedy Festival promises to be a huge night of laughs. Its rare to see such a formidable lineup all performing under the one roof. Tom Rhodes, Carvin H Goldstone, Thinjiwe, Pule Mapacapac and host Dustin Moore round out an event that will ensure the festival kicks off with a bang!


Tom Rhodes is one of the most hard working and respected comedians in the world.  With a fierce stage presence that is unmatched he is now celebrating his 30th year as a stand up comedian. The New York Times describes him as “A mostly natural intellect with a knack for reporting the harsh realities of life with a dark and absurdly optimistic cynicism.”

An adventurer forging his own path, Rhodes has built a career that not only includes stand-up specials, a sitcom, a travel show, a late night talk show, numerous live CD’s & DVD’s, his critically acclaimed podcast Tom Rhodes Radio, as well as being a travel writer for the Huffington Post.

Fresh from releasing his new hour special Light Sweet Crude on Netflix Rhodes has had a long raucous career covering every corner of the globe. His latest LIVE recording as a double CD Colossus of Me released in 2012. In 2009 named his DVD Rhode Scholar the Number One Comedy DVD of 2009.

His latest TV appearances include Just for Laughs, IFC's Comedy Bang Bang and Sullivan and Sons. Tom is a regular guest on Comedy Central's @midnight. In 2014 Rhodes was featured in Comedy Central Comedy Underground with Dave Attell series and in 2012 in the Showtime stand-up series, Live From Amsterdam (2012). His three half hour stand-up specials include two Comedy Central Presents... (2009 & 2001) and Raw, recorded in Stockholm for Swedish television (2009). He had his own sitcom television show on NBC called Mr. Rhodes (1996 – 1997), his own Late Night Talk show on Dutch television Kevin Masters starring Tom Rhodes (2002 – 2003), and traveled the world as a TV presenter on the Dutch travel program Yorin Travel (2004).

As a featured travel writer for Huffington Post his travel story ‘A Tragedy, A Miracle And A Brawl...Welcome to Ireland’ got awarded by the Huffington Post one of the Top 10 Best Travel Stories of 2011.

His podcast Tom Rhodes Radio was named one of the Top 10 of Best Podcasts of 2011 by Matador Network and was praised as the best newcomer in The Onion AV’s Club (December 2012). Tom Rhodes Radio joined Bill Burr's & Al Madrigal's All Things Comedy Network. Tom has been a guest on The Joe Rogan Experience (#248, 364, 420 & 500), The Adam Corolla Show, Marc Maron's WTF, Aisha Tyler's Girl On Guy, London Real, The Artie Lange Show, Ron & Fez Show, NPR Snap Judgment.


Carvin H Goldstone is one of the biggest names in South African Comedy. The Durban based comedian was nominated for three 2017 South African Comics Choice Awards including South African Comic of the year two years in a row after getting the nod in 2016. Previous winners are Trevor Noah and Loyiso Gola. 
A well traveled international act Carvin has performed in the United Kingdom, Middle East, Australia, New Zealand and across Southern Africa including Swaziland and Zimbabwe. Carvin H Goldstone has four well out comedy shows and three recorded specials.

In 2015 Carvin embarked on a five city your with Soul Promotions performing one man shows in Auckland, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Sydney. The show also enjoyed a two month run in 2017 on the MSC Sinfonia's 700 seater San Carlo Theatre with several standing ovations. Goldstone is a regular headliner at the comedy clubs across South Africa including the Cape Town Comedy Club which was voted one of the top ten clubs in the world. Carvin is multiple award winning comic and broadcast journalist with 4 Vodacom Journalist of the Year awards, the highest honour in South African journalism. The show enters the political comedy arena with views on South African and world politics, race and political incorrectness.

Carvin’s hilarious family-friendly comedy has won him audiences across the globe. Describing what audiences can expect from his show, Carvin says, “Lots of off-the-wall ideas, impersonations and some everyday characters in some not-so-everyday situations.” Carvin is also major player in development of comedy in Africa and was nominated as the Nandos Best Friend of Comedy 2017 for growing comedy in Africa.


One of the most highly recognized and popular African stand up comedians on the road today, Thenjiwe first Burst into the comedy scene in 2012, beginning her career in London where she was voted finalist in the funny woman awards in the same year and has already performed all over South Africa, UK, Belgium, America, Berlin and Congo.

In the early stages of her career, Thenjiwe held double duties as a Lawyer and a comedian, until she became so busy that she had to choose one of the two, and for this maestro of comedy it was natural to choose comedy, even her then employer at the law firm told her “You have a special gift, use it wisely”: Everybody wants to be great at doing something, she just wants to be great at making people laugh, from the moment she picked up the microphone, she just knew she had finally found her purpose for being on earth. 

A KwaMashu native, Thenjiwe has been performing comedy around the world. This year (2017) Thenjiwe has already performed in England, Swaziland, Canada, Botswana, and to an outstanding audience of over 10 Thousand in Nigeria.  The first South African to sell out a debut one woman show (LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE) which Premiered at the Durban Playhouse and received rave reviews from both the media and audiences, followed by sold a sold out tour around the country, SADEC and Birmingham UK. Her second comedy special BORN AGAIN AFRICAN was also a major success. Known as the 'Queen of one-liners' she is certain be hit at this festival. 


Rounding out a trio of funny South Africans is host Dustin Moore.  Former private banker, Dustin, left the world of money for the stage of funny! He is a comedian, writer and radio show star. He has performed at comedy clubs around the world, bringing his unique mix of volcanic energy, intelligent humour and an engaging presence. He has also written and starred in radio show "Funny Business". He is a hit across the globe, having performed at the Comedy Central Festival in South Africa. 


Introducing Filipino 'joke machine' Pule! Half self-deprecating, half bravado, Pule finds humor even in the most depressing of human conditions, especially in his personal tragedies. He combines his experience as a Filipino living overseas and how he sees the ugly truths in his act. 

Likable, energetic, full of surprises and sometimes musical,  Pule represented Philippines in the Magners International Comedy Competition Singapore 2016 where he was a standout. He was also a finalist in the same event in 2018.
