World Class and Johnnie Walker presents “GUEST BARTENDER NIGHT” by Two World Class Bartenders  and Residential Mixologist on Thursday February 4th 2016 at VOGUE Lounge!

Bangkok’s dining scene continues to grow and innovate this year with internationally acclaimed bartenders scheduled to create a stir in Thailand’s evolving cocktail culture. Diageo Moet Hennessy (Thailand) kicks off 2016 by flying in two celebrity Japanese bartenders Manabu Ohtake and Michito Kaneko for special cocktails events in Bangkok in early February. These activities are part of a series of events under the World Class programme that is raising the fine art of cocktail making around the world.

VOGUE Lounge, the world’s first chic club-style restaurant in Thailand operating under the concept of a restaurant bar dining, has been selected as one of the showcase arenas where these two bartenders convene with VOGUE Lounge’s residential mixologist Hideyuki Saito, to concoct the most creatively unique thirst-quenching cocktails, particularly highball cocktails made from various spirits.

Manabu Ohtake and Michito Kaneko, formerly the Diageo Reserve World Class Bartenders of 2011 and 2015 respectively, will lead a series of master classes and guest bartending nights at leading Bangkok establishments including VOGUE Lounge. The two will fascinate Bangkok cocktail lovers with some of their newly created cocktails and highball cocktails that reflect Japan’s current highball trends and structured cocktail culture.

Currently based at Tower’s Bar “Bellovisto” at Tokyo’s Cerulean Tower Tokyu Hotel, Manabu Ohtake has been bartending for 15 years. Manabu is a relaxed, rather than a reserved Japanese bartender you might expect. His cocktails do exhibit the precision that Japanese bartenders have become renowned for, but he’s not afraid to inject his own personality into the job. Having started on the restaurant side of things, he remembers being transfixed by the sight of a bartender across the room, shaking a cocktail and holding the attention of a group of customers.

Michito Kaneko, the owner of The Lamp Bar in Nara, defeated a global collection of bartenders in possibly the most competitive World Class Global Final ever. Representing Japan, he was crowned the world’s best bartender at the Diageo Reserve World Class Bartender of the Year (2015) competition, held in Cape Town, South Africa.

Hideyuki Saito, VOGUE Lounge’s very own award winning bartender, started his mixologist career in Tokyo. He was trained in classical Japanese bartending which has precise and elegant characteristics. Hide believes that knowing about the fundamentals is quintessential in the art of mixing drinks. Hide has worked all around the world including the busy cities of London and New York. He has created cocktail menus for Electric House (SOHO House Group) and Purl in London and Angel’s Share in New York.

About World Class

Since the programme’s inception in the UK in 2009, it has quickly spread around the globe, inspiring and educating over 15,000 bartenders in the art of mixology. World Class was introduced to Thailand in 2011 and has since grown immensely to elevate the craft of mixology and bartending in the country.

About The Highball

‘Highball’ came to term in the late 19th century in bars of golf club houses of the United Kingdom, where the term "ball" meant a "whisky beverage", served in a high glass. ‘The highball’ started becoming popular in the 1950s in the times when Japan was conservative and in a period of recovery after World War II. At that time, Whisky was well seen in the older generation’s drinking menu, but a younger generation and casual drinkers have been exploring a way to enjoy the flavors of whisky without the intensity of shots interfering with meals or food. This then ignited the drinking revolution of ‘The Highball’ which is a cocktail whose base composition is whisky added with sparkling water, served in a large glass filled with ice. The Highball is as popular in Japan as it ever was before, as it can now even be found canned in convenience stores around the country. Today, this drinking revolution has made its way to Thailand as consumers are finding more ways to experience and enjoy whisky.
