We are delighted to open our 2014 film series, with a wonderful musical from a country that revels in music, dance, passion, and the energy of life - Cuba.

The film captures it all, as it traces the rags-to-riches story of  a cabaret artiste who uses her gorgeous voice and equally gorgeous body, to become the top star of the famous Alhambra theatre. The men fall for her like ninepins, from the simple musical accompanist, to the theatre-owner, to the powerful politician.

Based on a book of a real-life cabaret star, the film centres around Rachel, a simple chorus girl whose talent  is discovered by Adolfito, a musical accompanist. He introduces her to the owner of the famed Alhambra Theatre, Federico, and before she knows it, she becomes the leading lady of his shows, as well as his home. The film whizzes us through her dazzling songs and shows, which drive the male-only audience of the cabaret-theatre, to excitement and ecstasy. Rachel goes from high to high, even as she gets estranged from her near and dear ones. She becomes involved with a dashing and ambitious politician, who supports her until she attempts a risqué and politically sensitive play.

Rachel's  single-minded passion for the theatre is the raison d'etre of the drama, and her joi de vivre  creates the mood of the movie, until the end, when she pathetically learns her painful lessons.

The film resurrects the great musical theatre of the 1920's in Cuba (which was open only to men). Actress Beatriz Valdes became a top star after this film, which was described as "Her most significant role of all times". The film stars a bevy of  other top Cuban stars too. It won a raft of national awards in Cuba, and went on to pick up awards at the top Latin American festivals of  the world. It was also Cuba's entry to the Oscars in 1990.

To celebrate the opening of our 2014 Film Series with a much-lauded  movie from his country, Cuban Ambassador HE Victor Ramirez Pena, will serve Cuban Rum, cocktails, snacks like tamal, yuca frita - and of course, what else but Cuban cigars.

Don't miss a memorable movie, the first of our 2014 Contemporary World Film Series.
