Turkey’s Presidential Symphony Orchestra is one of the oldest symphony orchestras in the world that has been able to operate without any interruption. Polyphonic music entered Turkey during the reign of  Sultan Mahmud the Second in 1826. The Sultan then invited Guiseppe Donizetti from the Imperial Palace of  the Austria-Hungarian empire to lead the orchestra. Until the Foundation of the Republic, the orchestra was called ‘Mızika-i Hümayun’ (Royal Band) and it performed solely in the palace. In 1924, the orchestra was transferred to Ankara on the command of Kemal Atatürk.

Prominent conductors like Louis Fremaux, Lukas Foss, Walters Susskind, Aaron Copland and Jean Perisson, have taken the baton and the orchestra has performed in Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, Romania, Yugoslavia, Russia, Italy, France, Switzerland, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Spain, Poland, Cyprus, Czech Republic, South Korea, Japan, USA, England, Hungary and China. Currently Rengim Gökmen is the Chief Conductor.
