Chiang Mai is probably the most picturesque place in Thailand to take part in Loy Krathong, but here is our guide of where to spend it in Bangkok:
The River Festival 1-6 November
Bangkok is hosting for the first time a River Festival 2014 along the Chao Phraya River from the Rama VIII Bridge to Asiatique the Riverfront. The festival includes Loy Krathong, and performances by the River of Culture. The main locations for the River Festival are:
- Wat Phra Chetuphon
- Wat Arun Ratchawararam
- Wat Kalayanamitr
- Wat Prayurawongsawas
As these venues are on both sides of the river, there will be free shuttle boats operating throughout the event.
Many of Bangkok’s hotels will be hosting special events to celebrate Loy Krathong with traditional Thai buffets, Thai dancers, free flow options and of course your own krathong to float. Recommended hotels include the Mandarin Oriental, Shangri-La,the Royal Sheraton and So Sofitel.
River Cruise on the Loy Nava
Float your krathong from the deck of the historic Tahsaneeya Nava rice barge while enjoying a ten course traditional Thai and seafood meal sailing along the Chao Phraya River. There are three cruising times and two different menu options.
Despite being an urban metropolis, Bangkok is also home to many parks with lakes - our advice is to head early however, as these are likely to get very busy. Try Benjakit, Benjasiri or Lumpini.
