Wonderful Trash in Bangkok by Ishida Shinya
Speedy Grandma -
Please welcome our new artist in residence : Ishida Shinya
He is staying at Speedy Grandma right now to making new work for the exhibition.
For this exhibition, Ishida plans to build in addition to the works to be shown at the gallery, an art piece on wheels, which he will pull and move through the streets of Bangkok. As Bangkok was a major influence in shaping much of Ishida’s current works, Ishida is very interested in how his work (which he has shown around in Japan) will appear to the people of Bangkok, and has come to think of this as a challenge he must accept. The visual artist and filmmaker Yuya J. Morimoto will accompany Ishida for a part of the trip, recording Ishida’s process, and is planning to show the recorded footage at the exhibition.
Shinya Ishida
An artist residing in Kyoto, Japan, Shinya Ishida will hold his first art exhibit outside of Japan. Ishida crafts his sculptures and other works around the theme of “an invisible force,” and creates works such as altarpieces from materials that are considered to be trash or waste.
In 2014, Ishida created his work, “Mobile Altarpiece, ” and
gained attention through his “Loading Marathon,” in which he physically pulled his work through the streets of Tokyo and Kyoto to the gallery where it was to be displayed. This time, Ishida will reside in Bangkok for 2 months, during which time he will look for the materials to build his new work. During the 2-month residency , he will try to connect with as many local people as possible, with hopes of witnessing the invisible force that is born through the unpredictable power of communication.
