Timemaker: A Photo Exhibition by Zuzanna Kowalska

Thonglor Art Space proudly introduces the first art activity of 2017 with a photo exhibition “Timemaker” by Polish-born photographer and filmmaker Zuzanna Kowalska.

“Timemaker” explores a day in life of her 84-year-old grandfather Rajmund Kubiak, a watchmaker in a quaint small town in south-eastern Poland. Having run his small clock and watch repair shop in the town center for nearly 55 years, repairing the town’s clock tower and antique clocks brought occasionally by collectors, Rajamund is known by everyone in the town for living and sharing his life stories with the town folks and family including his agonizing pain of losing his 48 year-old son from cancer 13 years ago. His profession is slowly fading away and only few with his type of craftsmanship is left in the country.

Zuzanna Kowalska is a documentary photographer who has keen, observant eyes for candid and unassuming sequences in people’s life. Kowalska has been known for her ability to meld deep and personal interest into a narrative photography. Her recent series of photography shows a devastating remains of life after an earthquake in Nepal. In this more personal solo exhibition she engages the full breadth of intimacy with her own family member as the subject, showing two sets of photograph. One follows a day in life of Rajamund from starting the day at the repair shop to when he ends it, another, taken by Mariusz Jastrzebski, sees Rajamund in an empty space which used to be the very shop after of his; recently closed down. A 10-minutes-long video by Zuzanna, installed in the third floor of Thonglor Art Space, reveals that although his tiny world is surrounded by clocks, Rajamund has travelled the world and his years in life was composed of rich experience than one would imagine.

Timemaker by Zuzanna Kowalska will be showing at Thonglor Art Space from 13th January to 13th February 2017. Each weekend the exhibition will be accompanied by three live performance art with relevant theme curated by Thonglor Art Space which will be announce separately.
