Performance Installation: 'There I was, underground, bending the light'

'There I was, underground, bending the light' acts as a surreal, pop-up club where passersby inhabit the same space with performers. Inside, there are conjoined, albino deer whose skin is branded like designer handbags. They gaze at a revolving sculpture (half disco ball, half burning bush) while embodying a cathartic state. On the second level, two women execute kaleidoscopic patterns on a day bed, quickly morphing in and out of psychedelic symmetry. On the roof, the audience is invited to lounge on the ground and soak up the light of the moon. Echoing throughout is techno music infused with fire alarms. The audience completes the world by playing the club-goers.

Paige Phillips is an American artist based in Bangkok, Thailand. Her artwork is situated on the border between the performing and visual arts, and is primarily concerned with physical/mental endurance challenges and recontextualizations of rituals. Some venues that have produced her work include: M1 Singapore Fringe Festival (Singapore), Park Gallery (Kathmandu, Nepal), Microscope Gallery (New York City, USA), Little Berlin (Philadelphia, USA), Sculpture Center (Cleveland, USA), On the Boards (Seattle, USA), Velocity Dance Center (Seattle, WA), Pyramid Atlantic (Washington D.C., USA), Columbus Moving Company (Columbus, OH) and Urban Arts Space (Columbus, USA). In addition to making artwork, Phillips has performed for others as a dancer, improviser and performance artist throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia.
