Neilson Hays Library, Bangkok #EllieLostinBangkok

Ellie Dixon is an Australian artist and many artistic personalities in one.

Having originally embarked on a career in fashion design, Dixon quickly discovered a propensity and natural flair towards the illustrative design components that allowed her to explore figure construction and body and textile detailing through drawing.

Soon after she commenced 4 years of formal training at the University of New South Wales distinguished College of Fine Arts (COFA), where she was selected for the esteemed “Porisity Studio” scholarship, an innovative global research project encouraging recipients to re-vision public city spaces and use art to test the functional boundaries of built form. With a keen observational eye, such cityscape themes are still reflective in her work today.

Comfortable working across many mediums including sculpture, oil, film, sound and now pastels, the childlike simplicity of the images belies the labyrinth of the meaning behind each. In 2013, Dixon lost her partner and moved to Bangkok on a quest to find self and reclaim happiness. Against the backdrop of the lush urban jungle, the images provide subtle and perhaps deliberately cryptic representations of love, pain, isolation, sorrow, passion, despair, intrigue and resurgence.

Talking about her work Dixon says, “I’m completely undisciplined in that I don’t conceive anything past the initial bubble of an idea. I’m heavily influenced by mood, and music, and then instinctively feel my way through colours, whilst simultaneously manipulating form. The images are extracted from a deep level of consciousness and I am often very surprised at the end”.

“Lost in Bangkok” is Ellie’s first solo exhibition in Thailand.
