Life - Music - Phin
Art Café By Brown Sugar -
My works come mostly from the very simple experiences of my life. When I think back to the time we started Caravan (1974), I remember each band member's music instrument. I think about making my first Phin by hand ( 3-string Isaan guitar). First, I cut a slab of wood from a Rosewood log, then I sketched the outline of the Phin on its surface using a stick of charcoal. Using a saw, chisel and axe I finished forming the Phin. The texture was still quite rough so I shaved the wood until I created the correct sound of the Phin.
I remember Nga's ( Surchai Jantimatorn) first guitar. It was a gut string guitar. Nga took a nail to the surface of the body and sketched the outline of a skull which he spray-painted white. Nga explained that if we have no money, we will not be able to take the guitar to the pawn shop so the guitar will stay with us forever.
At the same time I will always remember Thongkhan Thana's violin and the guitar of Weerasak "Daeng" Suntonsi. When Daeng played his guitar, he had the sound of the Kong Wong ( a U-shaped xylophone type instrument).
The other paintings reflect my impressions from my trip to China. My son reminded me of how my name is pronounced in Chinese, Jang Weuy.
My works express my inspirations--that's all!!
