By Kamin Lertchaiprasert

We all know that death is inevitable but what is the state ‘before birth and after death’? This is a dharma puzzle which Kamin Lertchaiprasert has spent over six years learning, understanding and rendering in his art collection ‘Before birth, After death’ since 2008.

The ‘Before Birth, After Death (sculpture)’ exhibition showcases some results from the artist’s learning in the form of messages from his own rumination and his immediate dialogues with others. Various ideas from this process were reexamined and recreated on over 730 drawings and 1089 pieces of plastic skull sculpture while some messages were transformed into bronze and ceramic works (raku). The artistic process in this collection represents how the artist explores the essence of daily life hidden behind words, and at the same time tries to understand his own self, life and the states of birth and death, which exist in nature at every moment.
