A set of two workshops on two consecutive Saturdays, devoted to helping your own unique writer’s voice. We learn writing from others, from listening, from reading. When we start out, we imitate what we have learned. So it is not surprising that, for many of us, finding our own unique voice is a long, frustrating and sometimes almost impossible mission.

So where does that unique voice come from? It can only come from the inside, from the unique writer you already are. This workshop teaches you how to let that writer’s voice emerge to do your writing. (As always, we also aim for a less painful writing experience overall…)

Writing is a craft on every level. Many workshops teach editing and construction skills, many groups specialise in critiquing each other’s writing. Anette’s workshops teach something very different. They start much earlier in the writing process, the moment all writers fear (and secretly desire), the moment of the empty page.

This is a practical workshop, and most of our time will be spent writing, using Anette’s special ‘rough writing’ and ‘superfocus’ methods. Refresh your practice with new, unfamiliar creative experiences. Expect to be surprised by what emerges on your empty page. Learn techniques you can apply every day to cultivate your writer’s voice. For writers of all levels and all genres including non-fiction – all you need is an open mind and a passionate spirit!

Anette Pollner is the leader of the Bangkok Women’s Writers Group, and co-author and editor of ‘Bangkok Blondes’ a collection published by the in 2007 and still a Thai English language bestseller. She writes a regular column in the Big Chili, and has won several novel and essay prizes. Her stories and articles are published under various pseudonyms in the US and UK, including Cleis Press, Drollerie Press, the Guardian, MarieClaire, and several big name publishers. She has been featured as a local author in the Star Malaysia, the Bangkok Trader, the Bangkok Diary, and on Thai TV (‘Good Morning Bangkok’). During her 15 years in London she studied creative writing at the City Lit and City University where she subsequently also taught, as well as at the Arvon Foundation and the Groucho Club and was a regular reader at the Poetry Society. Anette also leads the famous Bangkok workshops ‘Introduction to Working with Dreams’ at NCS. In her ‘first life’ she was a theatre and opera director.
**(We take a big risk in planning the workshop and paying for expenses if we don’t know how many participants to expect – this is why we give you such a big discount if you book early. Booked places are non-refundable but transferable – you can give your ticket to someone else, like a theatre ticket.)
