A monthly cultural studies session hosted by university lecturer and author Viriya Sawangchot. This session we will be screening two campaign documentaries 'The Great European Disaster Movie' and 'Lexit The Movie', different sides of propaganda from the recent UK's EU referendum.

Screening starts at 8pm and will be followed by a casual discussion.

►LEXIT THE MOVIE
A documentary film for voting out of the European Union. The film was made by a group of pro-Brexit Labour members and leftist supporters. It was made in just 2 weeks with £6000 of crowdfunding. The film aims to present the facts through the Left wing on why the UK should leave the undemocratic EU. Lexit also responds to Brexit The Movie, a campaign documentary of political parties and groups from the conservative spectrum in the UK.

►THE GREAT EUROPEAN DISASTER MOVIE
A documentary-drama made for BBC Four funded by a BBC/Arte co-production, and was directed by Annalisa Piras, an acclaim film director of Girlfriend in a Coma, and Bill Emmott, a former editor of The Economist. The film explores ranges of factors including immigration, tolerance and racism, the banking crisis and austerity, war, or peace which constituted a European identity. After the screening in 2015, the film provoked a controversial issue on pro-EU propaganda film. However, the film inspired to incite debate and critical reflection on the European Union and its discontents.

►VIRIYA SAWANGCHOT
A cultural researcher based in Bangkok, Thailand. He was an API senior fellow (2013-2014), Asian Public Intellectual program, Nippon Foundation, and has previously taught in Cultural Studies program, Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia, Mahidol University, Thailand.
